S3 Episode 15 Psychological Safety at Work with Marissa Senzaki
Marissa Senzaki is a seasoned talent acquisition and people operations leader with international experience across Silicon Valley, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Her expertise in working with early-stage startups and hyper-growth companies led her to advocate for a humanistic approach to recruitment.
With 15 years of experience, Marissa has recruited for some of the world’s best-known technology names – including Google, Facebook, and Slack. As Slack’s first HR hire, Marissa was instrumental in growing the company from under 50 employees to a team of well over 850 globally, in less than 3 years.
Drawing on lessons learned from her experience in Silicon Valley, including working for controversial companies and toxic workplaces, Marissa advises hiring managers and founders on the importance of building people-first and values-aligned companies. She believes that fostering inclusive and psychologically safe work environments is critical for employee wellbeing.
As a public speaker, Marissa has spoken at various conferences, including sharing the stage with Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak at Pivot Summit. In 2016, she appeared in Business Insider’s ‘Top 100 Coolest People in Australian Tech’ list. Her interviews have been featured across print, digital, and radio. Marissa holds a Bachelor of Arts with a major in psychology from San Francisco State University. In addition to recruitment, she is an angel investor and advisor to startups.
Tune in to hear OWL about interview red flags, key questions to ensure your values align with the company, and how to create psychological safety for yourself and your employees.
